The story of Aleksandrs Jūrmala, who has lost a leg in a collision with a trolleybus at the intersection of Kalnciema and Baložu streets in Riga, has earned a great stir on the Internet. Aleksandrs has started writing a blog about what happened and, despite the atypical positivism in this situation, will not refuse the help of fellow citizens.

Alexander is a 33-year-old designer and programmer with 16 years of experience, an athlete and paraglider who has flown over the Alps and the Himalayas, as well as a loving husband and father of two young girls. He is aware that after the tragedy, life will no longer be as it used to be, but he alone is responsible for what it will be like.

Aleksandrs lives with his family in Dzintari, but goes to work in Riga every day by bicycle – he usually travels 22 kilometers in about 40 minutes. However, on that fateful day, he decided to change the route a bit and go to Riga for bicycle spare parts.

The fatal accident took place on July 22 this year at about half past seven in the evening. As Alexander drove calmly down the street, a trolleybus suddenly appeared from the side and he had to brake quickly. As a result, the trolleybus rode on a bicycle frame with one wheel, which, like a knife, passed through Alexander’s leg just below the knee, but the trolleybus pulled him on the asphalt for some time. Significantly, the man was conscious all the time.

We could not save my leg, as evidenced by the photo taken by the medics. The fracture was so severe that all nerve and muscle ligaments were lost, and tissue death had already begun. (Alexander warns that people with weak nerves and pregnant women should not look at this photo.)

Aleksandrs spent the next two weeks in ‘Gaiļezers’ hospital, where he paid 190 euros (160 euros for an inpatient stay, 30 euros for a leg amputation), but then returned to Jūrmala. The state has issued him a temporary prosthesis worth seven euros, but in order to continue living a full life, you need a good prosthesis, which you do not have money yet.

In his blog, Alexander describes both the phantom pain experienced by almost all people who have lost a member, as well as the psychological stages that every person goes through after a loss. Also interesting are his remarks about the reaction of fellow human beings to seeing a man without a leg: children lie for a long time, adults turn away, grandmothers whisper to try to complain.

To get a good, modern C-Leg prosthesis, which would allow Alexander to live a full life and play sports, 46,000 euros are needed, of which 12,000 have already been donated, but this is only a little more than a quarter. To support Aleksandrs in saving the money necessary for the prosthesis, please donate to SEB bank account LV72UNLA0095122013840 (Aleksandrs Kaļičava, personal identification code 160981-11223).
